Project Description

Crystal Song, BADC Chair

The BADC Chair organizes the home competition for the Columbia Ballroom Dance Club by making executive decisions and setting up the timeline for preparations, assigning tasks to competition coordinators, and reporting to the club’s executive board. The BADC Chair also serves as the liaison between the governing and the competition boards.

Year and MajorCC 2018, Ethnic Studies and History
Why she joined CU Ballroom:I went to the fall showcase my freshman year and was immediately drawn to how warm and enthusiastic all the people were! It’s a wonderful group of people who are able to love and support each other through all the stress of school and dance and life. I’m so grateful to be a part of this family, and being on board has just been a way to give back and pour my heart into making it even better.”
Her favorite CU Ballroom memory: “Harvard 2017, where we were by far the loudest and most obnoxious team cheering for our dancers on the floor — you know you’re doing it right when other people start giving you dirty looks.”
What she enjoys most about ballroom dancing: “I love how it challenges me to push my body and the expectations I have of myself. Doing all that work, when you’re able to communicate with another person through movement, to music, is so magical and worthwhile.”
Her goals for this year as a board member: “To build on all the fantastic work that previous BADC chairs have done and feedback from our competitors – to host the best home competition yet!”
Her advice for newcomers: “Let go of any nerves or anxiety you have. It’s totally normal to feel awkward at first, but you’ll get the most out of your experience if you just embrace it all and take some risks.”
Her favorite ballroom dances: “Tango for Standard, Rumba for Latin.”
Her favorite ballroom dance-able song: “‘White Wings’ always gives me epic waltz feels~”
Her favorite ballroom dance move: “Fallaway slip pivot – double reverse – contracheck is the most boss thing in the Standard syllabus!”
Her favorite social dance: “Always the Hustle! I love how flexible and fluid it is. Also, I’m still totally a sucker for disco music, no matter how many people make fun of me for it.”
Her favorite dance quote: “You have to love dancing to stick to it. It gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away, no paintings to show on walls and maybe hang in museums, no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that single fleeting moment when you feel alive.” ― Merce Cunningham
